All summer long my family has spent Tuesday nights at Irvine Lake… but we aren’t fishing. Instead we’ve been mountain biking. That’s right, Tuesday nights at Irvine Lake is home to Orange County’s own local mountain bike race series – the Over the Hump Mountain Bike Race Series. According to their website “Over the Hump Mountain Bike Race Series kicked off our inaugural season in 2009 with 2 races. Both sold out! Back by popular demand, this season there are 12 races.” With still 5 races left in the series, there is still time to get in on the action.
“OTH is designed to be a fun, relaxed event for everyone. Our race course has been designed to challenge all levels of riders, and give you a great place to experience the fun and excitement of mountain bike racing.” Speaking from experience I can tell you this is true. Both my hubby & I have throughly enjoyed the races this summer (& while my hubby has some skills, I’m definitely a novice mountain biker.)
The best part of the race series (other than a beautiful course with great view of Irvine Lake & the Santa Ana Mountain Range; a great first-race experience as well as challenging enough for the experience rider; & access to this exclusive mountain bike race track, which is normally not available to riders) is the amazing family environment. Trust me, I wouldn’t be packing up all the kids, every single week if it wasn’t a fun, family-friendly event. There are picnic areas, lots of grass & shade, a playground for the kids, & full restrooms. Pack a picnic dinner, or bring some cash for the on-site bbq.
Ready to try your hand at a little mountain bike racing? You can still sign up for the remaining 5 races (Tuesday nights at 6pm, August 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th & 31st). The cost is $25/ race if you register online HERE, otherwise it’s $30 if you register the day-of, on-site. & If you’ve got kids that are interested, they have boy’s & girl’s junior (11-15 years old) divisions & a kids race (6-10 years old) every week ($10 on-site registration) too.
