Orange County is great because there are so many quick & easy Orange County daytrips you can make. For example why not take an easy daytrip to Point Loma? Or a quick vacation in San Diego, CA ? I’m thinking a Point Loma sportfishing trip sounds fun. Luckily, today Sharlene of the travel website Trekaroo is sharing one of her recent Orange County daytrips with us…
Orange County daytrips
One of my favorite things about living in Orange County is that we are so close to everything. We can hit the beach, explore the desert, ski the slopes, visit world class museums, and still be home for dinner. My family loves to explore Southern California and San Diego is one of favorite daytrip destinations. Last winter, we decided to veer off our normal path towards Balboa Park and try something different. That day, we fell in love with Point Loma.
Daytrip to Point Loma
No trip to Point Loma is complete without a stop at Point Loma Seafoods. A San Diego institution, Point Loma Seafoods first opened its doors back in 1963 and has been serving locals the freshest fish, shellfish, sandwiches, and soups in a deli counter style fashion ever since. It’s the perfect place to grab lunch for a picnic by the sea. Kids will love its dockside location which is frequented by sea lions hoping for a shot at your leftovers.
After grabbing lunch, head further down the point to Cabrillo National Monument. Visiting Cabrillo is like visiting two different San Diegos at the same time. On the western side of the point, the land is wild. Dramatic cliffs drop off into the churning Pacific below. It’s a great place to hike and visit tide pools. The other side of the point overlooks the San Diego Bay. It’s THE place to take a picture of the downtown skyline. The visitor center and adjacent museum is full of great history of the first European’s to set foot on the West Coast of the United States, which occurred way bay in 1542. There is also an old historic lighthouse which is open for tours.
Point Loma Vacation
If you decide to make a night of it, consider staying at the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay Resort and Spa. This family friendly resort has 3 swimming pools, including one with a beach entry and slide. There is also a full service marina with sailboats, jet skis, paddleboats, kayaks, and bikes are all available for rental. If you get a moment to yourself, be sure to sneak over to the eco-friendly Blue Marble Spa.
