Every spring for the past 26 years, parents and kids have eagerly anticipated the Orange County Imagination Celebration, and this year is no exception.  Over 50 free or affordable events throughout Orange County will take place from April 15-May 29 in this festival of arts for children and families.  The Imagination Celebration is presented by Arts Orange County and the Orange County Department of Education in partnership with dozens of local arts organizations, schools and libraries.

Here are some highlights:

TREASURE ISLAND – The award-winning Laguna Playhouse Youth Theatre has staged impressive productions of children’s classics for over 20 years, and the shows often sell out early.  This favorite Robert Louis Stevenson tale is about the adventures of 14 year old Jim Hawkins as he joins a quest to find a hidden treasure.  April 22-May 1.   Laguna Beach.

CREATING WITH THE BEATLES – A sort of mini-festival-within-a-festival, McCoy Rigby Conservatory of the Arts (operated by famed gymnast & Tony Award-nominated actress Cathy Rigby)  will offer workshops in everything imaginable using The Beatles as inspiration!  May 1.  Yorba Linda.

FAMILY DAY AT THE BEALL – UCI’s Beall Center for Art + Technology is an hive of high tech art where you’ll never cease to be amazed by the ingenuity of artists who use the latest technology to fulfill their visions.  Expect a day filled with hands-on arts and science experiences.  April 16.  Irvine.

FLAMENCO EN VIVO – Claudia de la Cruz Flamenco Institute comes to the Grand Central Art Center in Santa Ana’s bustling Artists Village to perform and demonstrate the flamboyant popular art of flamenco music and dance.  May 7-14.  Santa Ana.

A CARNIVAL OF ANIMALS – American Pacific Ballet brings to life the delightful classical music suite by composer Camille Saint-Saens in performance and with dance workshops and other festival activities.  May 13.  Anaheim.

IMAGINATION CELEBRATION SHOWCASE GALLERY – Here is your chance to observe the amazing talent of school children from throughout Orange County who competed in this year’s Imagination Celebration poster contest on display at the Orange County Fine Arts Showcase Gallery.  The winning poster design for 2011 was created by Kira Wong, 8th grade, Sierra Vista Middle School, Irvine Unified School District. April 20-May 8.  Santa Ana.
