Hotels: Palm Springs, California

As much as I love Orange County, I really can’t wait to get out of town during those May Gray and June Gloom days.  Dealing with a thick marine layer for a month or so may be a small price to pay to live in paradise, but I have become so accustomed to our sunny and 72 degree days that I can’t help but pout when the weather isn’t perfect.

A great place for a weekend escape is the Coachella Valley, home to Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and Rancho Mirage.  Staying the weekend at a resort in one of these desert communities during our gloomy season is like taking a trip to visit summer for a few days.  It’s amazing how different the weather can be just two hours away.

Summer also happens to be the low season for the desert which means families can find some incredible deals at resorts that might otherwise be out of their price range.  Hotels that may cost close to $400 a night during the winter season often offer discounts of as much as $200 off a night during the warmer months. Recently, my family had the opportunity to escape the May Gray and enjoy a couple nights at Rancho Las Palmas in Rancho Mirage.  The 444-room resort combines upscale accommodations and Spanish-style architecture with family friendly features, including the park’s water park, Splashtopia.

Splashtopia is the perfect place to spend the day soaking in the sun.  A lazy river winds around the perimeter of two 100-foot waterslides, creating a little slice of kid paradise.  A small beach with sand toys waits for tots to explore while the main pool is large and lined with lounge chairs calling out to mom to lay back and relax in.   Of course, the spa and golf course are always popular with the adult crowd as well.

As easy as it is to spend the entire weekend poolside, there is also plenty of family fun for those looking to step off resort property.   Kids will love the Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert with its fun science exhibits and tot friendly grocery store experience, airplane lovers and history buffs can spend hours inside the Palm Springs Air Museum, with its air conditioned hangers filled with WWII aircraft, and if your family is looking for a break from the desert heat for a few hours, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway will take you to 8,000 feet above sea level where the mountain air is often 40 degrees cooler then on the valley floor.

Whether you decide to relax the weekend away and never leave the resort property or explore all that summer in the desert has to offer, you are sure to enjoy a couple days away from the gray. Who knows- maybe you will come home to those warm and sunny days that OC is famous for!
