Over the Hump Mountain Bike Race Series

In just a few weeks (on Tuesday, May 22nd to be exact) one of my favorite family-friendly summertime events series is scheduled to begin… the Over the Hump Mountain Bike Race Series.

I know, I know… you’re probably scratching your head wondering how exactly mountain bike racing could possibly be considered family-friendly?! But trust me, this awesome race series, held for 12 weeks at Irvine Lake, is not only mountain bike racing at it’s best, but it really & truly is totally & completely family-friendly. So grab a mountain bike, & head to Irvine Lake, this is one race series that your entire family will be looking forward to each week.

Over the Hump Mountain Bike Race Series

The Over the Hump Mountain Bike Race Series is “designed to be a fun, relaxed event for everyone.” & It really is. It’s the perfect mountain bike race for all levels of riders, from beginners (that’s me!) to much more experienced racers. & Unlike other mountain bike races, the Over the Hump race course is highly visible, meaning your personal cheering squad can view riders for most of the race.

Two years ago, I participated in the Over the Hump mountain Bike Race Series as a cheerleader, & last year I actually raced! Which meant that every week, I packed up the kids & the entire family headed over to Irvine Lake too. & As much as the kids loved cheering their dad or me on, what they looked forward to most was taking part in the pre-race 2-mile kid’s race, eating a picnic dinner on the grass under the shady trees & playing at the park-like play area with all their newly-found friends. I don’t know who is more excited to attend the mountain bike race each week – my hubby & I, or the kiddos.

Over the Hump Mountain Bike Race Series

So here are the details….

* The Over the Hump Mountain Bike Race series will take place Tuesdays, May 22nd – June 26th & July 24th – August 28th at 6pm.
* You can race on a week-by-week basis, or register for the entire 12 weeks. (If you pre-register online the cost is $25 per race, or on-site registration is $30 per race.)
* As I mentioned previously, there is a pre-race KIDS race every week for (6-10 years old) at 5:30pm, & all other “junior” racers (11 – 15 years old) can participate in the main event.
* The course itself isn’t extremely difficult (perfect for beginner & experienced riders alike). There are two fast-n-steep descents, some sharp corners, and 1/3 single and double track. There is fire road and wider trail involved in places, but it’s a fun  3.75 mile loop, and 350+ feet vertical gain. The actual number of laps you ride is dependent on which class you enter. & Don’t worry, you can definitely pre-ride the course from 4:30 – 5:30pm on race days!
* I know I keep saying that Over the Hump is the perfect mountain bike race for both beginners & experienced riders alike, but it’s true. When you register for the race you select a “class” – you’re either participating in the kid’s race, Juniors Class, Beginners Class (that’s me!), Sport Class, Super Sport Class, Single Speed Class, or Expert Class. Come race day, those classes are further broken down into men’s & women’s divisions, & age brackets within each class. & When the starting horn blows – everyone goes out in “waves” ensuring a more orderly start to the race.

I don’t know about you, but my Tuesdays are booked for the next several weeks. & Now that Baja Fresh Mexican Grill will be there serving up burritos, tacos, chips & salads, I also know what’s on the dinner menu for those nights as well.

With just a few weeks left, the kids & I are ramping up our “training.” I guess I’ve learned that the only way to conquer my fear of mountain biking is to face it head on. So who’s with me? Whether you’re a newbie mountain biker (like me), or an experienced rider, I hope I’ll see you at the Over the Hump Mountain Bike race series this summer.

xoxo, K
