06.23.2010 | Summer Reading Programs

With summer in full swing, I want to make sure that my kids do more than watch cartoons, run through the sprinklers or play their game systems all summer long. Thank goodness there are several FREE summer reading programs…

With the Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program, kids are encouraged to read any 8 books and track them in their very own “Passport to Summer Reading.”  (B&N has a great list of “suggested summer reading” HERE, broken up by ages.) There’s even a Parent Activity Kit you can download that has activities & teaching tips. & The BEST part? Kids get to choose a FREE book from a select list when they turn in their Passport at a local B&N. See, you don’t even have to do the bribing, B&N does it for you. (For all the details go HERE.)

Borders has a similar-ish program this summer as well… the Summer Reading Double-Dog Dare. Kids 12 & under, can read any 10 books. The, all you have to do is download, print & fill out THIS Double-Dog form. Bring the completed form to any Borders store. & Viola! One FREE book. For details & more information go HERE.

Of course you’ll want to check out both your local city library, as well as your local Orange County library because many of the libraries will be offering similar summer reading programs as well.

Happy reading!

05.06.2010 | Just Spotted Calendar: What to Do & Where to Go in OC

So I’m not biased or anything… but I thought our old calendar was pretty great. There was nothing like it in the OC, & because of that, we were proud. But I’m the first to admit that it was huge, completely overwhelming & not exactly user-friendly. & Unless I calendared in the events on my own personal calender, I often forget about all those really cool things I want to do in the OC, only to remember them, the day after they occur. With that in mind, we set out to discover a better, easier, more user-friendly solution.

You will now find that the super huge, jam packed Just Spotted Calendar of Where to Go & What to Do in Orange County is now powered by Google. Here’s what that means for you:

* Viewing & finding events is super easy. Check it out: you can view events in a Weekly, Monthly, or my personal favorite – the Agenda form, all with just a click of your mouse.

* If you have (or create) your own Google calendar, you can add any event listing on our calendar (or the ENTIRE calendar) to YOUR very own calendar, with just a simple click…. makes for organizing the events you really want to attend easy peasy. Plus, if you want, Google will even send you a reminder email, or even a text,  about the event so you’re sure not to miss it!

* & Because we are constantly updating the calendar with activities & events, you’ll be able to plan further into the future because you have full access to Orange County happenings… just scroll through the different months to see what’s coming up.

So if you haven’t already, be sure to check out the new & improved Just Spotted Calendar of Where to Go & What to Do in Orange County. Just click HERE for ideas & activities galore.

10.12.2009 | The Green Smoothie Girl at Belly Sprout

Have you ever heard of the Green Smoothie Girl? I hadn’t, until I talked with Christy Funk of Belly Sprout. We just randomly, happened to meet at Baby Loves Disco. (Yep! After posting about Baby Loves Disco last week I had to check it out for myself, & I happy to report my kiddos & I loved it… but, more on that later.) Anyway, back to the Green Smoothie Girl.

So I have to admit, I was a bit put off at first, seriously, she’s called the Green Smoothie Girl… I don’t know, it just doesn’t sound appetizing. But after hearing Christy rave about her, I decided to check her out for myself, & I think I’m in love. She promises (okay, she doesn’t promise anything, but her “rather significant research says”) following her “diet” results in better weight control, more energy, pretty skin & better sex (yes! I just said sex!).

The Green Smoothie Girl isn’t anything like I expected. She describes herself as “a soccer mom. I wear mascara, jeans, big hoop earrings, and pedicured toenails. I use a razor in the shower. I flat-iron my salon-weaved hair. I go to the neighborhood BBQ, the family party, the church social – and I don’t miserably sit in the corner with a plate of celery. I don’t look or talk much like the earthy-crunchies.”

I don’t know about you, but she’s sold intrigued me. So you can imagine how thrilled I was to find out that the Green Smoothie Girl is doing a FREE clinic & demo at Belly Sprout, THIS Thursday, October 15th from 7-8pm. She will be teaching a class on how to get 15 serving of greens & fruits into your diet (& even your children’s) every day. Quickly, painlessly & even better – inexpensively! Awesome! I have a hard enough time getting just one serving of veggies in sometime! I might have to do some juggling of the schedules, but I definitely want to check this one out. Maybe I’ll see you there!
